It’s been a funny summer- absolutely no joy with growing vegetables in the ground (radish, beetroot, parsley, coriander and radicchio) possibly due to out of date seeds or the prolonged cold weather followed by a heatwave. I think the real problem may have been the decision to layer up my soil and manure (new modern technique) rather than give it a good old digging over (traditional method). Next year it will be back to diggin’ over with a fork and buying new seeds.
The french beans seem to have come to a premature end and are half-eaten and withered. My plot design was completely wrong and I over planted the beans, squash and tomatillo creating a cramped, dark and damp corner enjoyed by ants, mosquitoes and snails.
